[Devo] Where Do You Look When You’re Ashamed (Psalm 25:1-7)

Shame tells us to hide, run, and isolate ourselves. Psalm 25 shows us a better way: lifting our souls to God and trusting Him to remember His mercy rather than our mistakes.

Lifting the Soul

Psalm 25 is a raw, honest prayer from a man who knows what it feels like to make mistakes. David starts by saying, “To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame.”

When we mess up, our instinct is to lower our gaze or run away from God. But lifting your soul means bringing your real, unfiltered self to Him. It’s an act of radical trust that says, “God, I am broken, but I believe You are safe.”

Teach Me Your Paths

David doesn’t just want relief from his problems; he wants transformation. He prays, “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.”

Following God isn’t about guessing the right moves; it’s a daily learning process. When we stumble, God doesn’t kick us off the path. He takes us by the hand and guides us in His truth. He is the God of our salvation, and our hope can rest in Him all day long.

The Power of Selective Memory

Look at verse 7. David asks God: “Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me.”

Isn’t it incredible that we can ask the all-knowing Creator of the universe to not remember something? Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, God looks at your past mistakes and chooses to remember His steadfast love instead of your failures. Your identity is rooted in His mercy, not your history.

Lord,

To You I lift up my soul today. I hand You my regrets, my past mistakes, and the things that make me feel ashamed. Thank You for choosing to look at me through the lens of Your steadfast love. Teach me Your paths today, and help me walk in Your truth.

Amen.
