He Instructs the Sinner
We often think God only hangs out with people who have it all together. But verse 8 says, “Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.”
God’s goodness isn’t a barrier that keeps us away; it’s the very reason He reaches out to us when we go astray. He meets us right in our messy realities. But notice who receives this guidance: “He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.” The only prerequisite for God’s direction is a humble heart that admits it needs help.
The Secret Counsel of the Lord
Verse 14 contains one of the most stunning phrases in the entire book of Psalms: “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.” (Some translations call this His “secret counsel.”)
Think about that. The Creator of the stars wants to share His heart with you. This isn’t a superficial connection; it’s a deep, covenant friendship. Fearing the Lord doesn’t mean being terrified of Him; it means having such a high respect for who He is that His opinion matters more than anyone else’s.
Eyes on the Lord
David wraps up this section by saying, “My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the net.”
Life is full of traps—bitterness, comparison, anxiety, and temptation. If we keep looking down at the traps, we’ll get stuck. But when we keep our eyes fixed on our Friend and Savior, He promises to pull us through.
Jesus,
Thank You for calling me Your friend. Forgive me for the times I treat You like a distant judge rather than a close confidant. Give me a humble heart that is ready to be taught by You. Keep my eyes fixed on You whenever life feels like a trap.
Amen.
