A Chorus of Constant Mercy
Psalm 136 is unique because every single verse ends with the exact same refrain: “for his steadfast love endures forever.” In the original Hebrew tradition, this was a responsive worship song. The leader would call out a truth about what God did, and the entire community would roar back the chorus. It acts as a steady rhythm, reminding us that no matter what changes in history, God’s heart stays the same.
God’s Love in the Cosmos and in History
The first half of the psalm walks through creation—the skies, the sun, the moon, and the stars. The second half walks through history—how God rescued His people from slavery, led them through the wilderness, and struck down opposing kings. The message is clear: the same God who masterfully aligned the stars is intimately involved in human history and rescuing His people.
Remembered in our Low Estate
Toward the end, the focus shifts down to the individual: “It is he who remembered us in our low estate… and rescued us from our foes.” God sees you when you are at your lowest point. His love isn’t just a grand, cosmic idea; it’s a rescuing, everyday reality that meets you right where you are.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
God,
Thank You that Your steadfast love endures forever. When my feelings fluctuate and my circumstances shift, let this truth anchor my soul. Thank You for remembering me in my low moments and for being a God who rescues. Your mercy is new every morning.
Amen.
