Setting Up Camp in the Secret Place
Psalm 91 opens with an incredible promise: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” Notice the words dwell and abide. This isn’t a quick Sunday visit; it’s about setting up camp. When we live our lives in close proximity to God, His presence naturally overshadows our problems.
The Shield and the Fortress
The psalmist uses vivid imagery of ancient warfare—shields, bucklers, deadly pestilence, and arrows flying by day. Life throws plenty of modern arrows our way: unexpected bad news, financial stress, or relational strain. But the promise here is that God’s faithfulness is a protective shield. He is a fortress we can actively run into when the storm gets too loud.
Answered in Trouble
The psalm ends with God speaking directly: “When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble.” Notice God doesn’t promise a life completely free of trouble, but He does promise a 100% presence guarantee in the trouble. You are never left to fight your battles by yourself.
Father,
You are my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. When fear tries to take over my thoughts today, remind me that I am tucked safely under Your wings. Thank You for being my shield and for promising to answer when I call. I rest in Your presence today, knowing You are fighting for me.
Amen.
