Our Temporary Story vs. God’s Eternal Reality
Moses begins Psalm 90 by laying out a stark contrast. God is eternal—He existed before the mountains were formed and stands outside of time. We, on the other hand, are a bit more like morning grass. We sprout, we flourish for a brief moment, and then the seasons change. It’s not meant to be a discouraging thought; it’s a reality check designed to ground us in who holds our days.
The Prayer for a Wise Heart
In verse 12, Moses writes a famous line: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” Numbering our days doesn’t mean living in fear of the clock. It means recognizing that our time on this earth is a limited, beautiful gift. When we realize our days are numbered, we stop wasting them on things that don’t matter and start investing them in things that do.
Establishing the Work of Our Hands
The psalm wraps up with a beautiful request: “Establish the work of our hands.” Left to our own devices, our efforts can feel temporary and fragile. But when we align our daily work, our parenting, our friendships, and our service with God’s heart, He gives our ordinary routines extraordinary, lasting value.
Lord,
You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the world was even formed, You were God. Help me to pause today and remember how big You are and how precious my time is. Teach me to number my days, not with anxiety, but with a heart of wisdom. Let Your favor rest on me today, and establish the work of my hands.
Amen.
