The Hidden God and the Secure Throne
It’s easy to praise God when life is going great. But what about when bad people win? In Psalms 9 and 10, David looks around and sees the wicked prospering, the helpless being oppressed, and the arrogant acting like God doesn’t exist. In fact, Psalm 10 opens with an incredibly honest question:
“Why, O Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?”
If you’ve ever looked at the brokenness of our world and wondered if God turned His back, you are feeling exactly what David felt. But notice where David anchors his hope. He doesn’t look at his changing circumstances; he looks at God’s unchanging character:
“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” (Psalm 9:9)
God isn’t missing. He is a Refuge. He remembers the cry of the afflicted, and He is executing justice even when we can’t see the behind-the-scenes work.
The Instinct to Flee
When things start falling apart, our default setting is often to panic or look for the nearest exit. In Psalm 11, David is being advised by well-meaning friends to do exactly that. They tell him to pack up and head for the hills because everything around him is deteriorating. They ask a question that feels incredibly modern:
“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)
Whether it’s a global crisis, a sudden shift in your family dynamic, or a workplace shakeup, it can feel like the very ground beneath your feet is giving way. The temptation to drop everything and let fear run the show is real.
Where the King Sits
Look at David’s immediate response in the very next verse: “The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven.”
David doesn’t deny that the foundations are shaking. He just realizes that the throne isn’t. God isn’t pacing the floors of heaven wondering what to do next. He is completely secure, completely sovereign, and completely aware.
When your personal foundations feel unsteady, you don’t need to flee to the hills; you just need to fix your eyes on the One who is the Rock. Our security doesn’t depend on our circumstances staying perfect; it depends on our God staying on the throne.
Lord,
When the foundations of my life feel shaky and it looks like injustice is winning, remind me that Your throne is completely secure. You are my stronghold. Give me the courage to stand firm right where I am, trusting that You see everything and will have the final, beautiful word.
Amen.
