[Devo] The Honest Pivot: From ‘How Long?’ to ‘How Good’ (Psalm 12 & 13]

It’s okay to ask God "how long?" Psalms 12 and 13 give us permission to bring our deep exhaustion to God—and shows us how to pivot back to joy.

The Exhaustion of Falsehood

We live in a culture that loves cheap talk. Flattery, exaggerations, double hearts, and broken promises seem to be the currency of our day. In Psalm 12, David is absolutely exhausted by it. He cries out,

“Help, Lord, for the godly man ceasing; for the faithful vanish from among the sons of men.”

It’s isolating when you feel like you are the only one trying to do the right thing, choose integrity, or stay faithful. But God responds to David’s weariness with a promise:

“Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise… I will place him in the safety for which he longs”.

Human words are cheap, but the words of the Lord are pure, like silver refined seven times. You can build your life on His promises.

The Turning Point of Trust

This brings us to Psalm 13, one of the most short and powerful raw prayers in the entire Bible. David is at the end of his rope. Four times in just two verses, he barks out the question:

“How long, O Lord?”

  • How long will You forget me?
  • How long will You hide Your face?
  • How long must I take counsel in my soul?
  • How long will my enemy be exalted over me?

If you are waiting for a medical breakthrough, a restored marriage, a prodigal child to come home, or a door to open, your heart has cried out How long?

But watch the beautiful pivot David makes at the very end of this short Psalm. He doesn’t wait for his circumstances to change before he changes his tune. He makes a choice:

“But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.” (Psalm 13:5-6)

He looks back at God’s track record. He remembers God’s covenant love. Even in the middle of the waiting room, you can sing because God has already been so incredibly good to you.

Lord,

I am bringing my honest hurts and my impatient questions to You today. Thank You that You don’t reject me when I struggle with timing. Even when I can’t see what You are doing, I choose to trust in Your unfailing love. I will sing to You because You have been incredibly good to me.

Amen.

Walking through a “How long, O Lord?” season is incredibly difficult when you try to do it in isolation. If you are in the waiting room of life right now, let your church family lift you up.
