Lips and Lifestyle: Doing Everything in the Name of Jesus

Is your faith just something you "clock into" on Sundays? This week in Colossians 3, we break down what it actually means to let the Word of God dwell in you and how to seamlessly represent Jesus in every single area of your life.

Orthodoxy Before Orthopraxy: Right Thinking Leads to Right Living

If you’ve been tracking with us through our Faith Under Pressure series in the book of Colossians, you know our golden rule: Orthodoxy before Orthopraxy. Right thinking leads to right behavior. Everything we do starts as a thought, which means if we want to change our actions, we have to start by letting Jesus completely reorient our minds.

In the first two chapters of Colossians, Paul lays down the heavy doctrinal foundation: Christ is preeminent, He is sufficient, and He is Lord of all. Now, in chapter 3, Paul pivots to the practical duty of the believer. He’s taking the theology and showing us exactly what it looks like on a Tuesday afternoon when life gets heavy and the spiritual warfare is real.

Navigating the Dark: Letting the Word Dwell Richly

In Colossians 3:16, Paul tells the church, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” The word “dwell” means to be at home. You should be as familiar with the Word of God as you are with your own house. Think about it: if you wake up at 2:00 AM to get a glass of water, you can walk through your house in the pitch dark without stubbing your toe because you know exactly where everything is. You are deeply familiar with the layout.

Spiritually, when you hide God’s Word in your heart—when you let it dwell richly and abundantly—you can navigate the darkest, heaviest seasons of life without stumbling. But you have to put in the effort. Jesus is anti-earning, but He is not anti-effort!

You Can’t Give What You Don’t Have

Paul continues by telling us we are to teach and admonish one another in all wisdom. But here is the hard truth: You cannot give what you do not have. If you aren’t saturated in the Word of God, you won’t have anything of value to offer someone else when they are hurting. We are called to do life together in trusted, Christ-centered relationships where we can speak truth into each other’s lives. But it requires wisdom. Truth without grace wounds, and grace without truth misleads. We need both, and that balance only comes from a life deeply rooted in Scripture.

Lips and Lifestyle: Erasing the Divide

In verse 17, Paul drops a massive challenge: “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus…”

Notice that Paul doesn’t divide life into “spiritual” and “secular.” There is no such thing as clocking into your Christianity for an hour on Sunday morning and then clocking out for the rest of the week. “Word and deed” simply means your lips and your lifestyle must align.

You are an ambassador for the King of Kings. You don’t work for your boss, your teachers, or your critics—you work for the Lord! Whether you are cleaning toilets, running a business, or raising toddlers, you represent Jesus. Don’t be a hypocrite (which literally means wearing a mask). Be the exact same person at home, at work, at Walmart, and at church.

Transforming Complaints into Worship

Paul finishes verse 17 by telling us to do all of this while “giving thanks to God the Father.” Gratitude is incredibly powerful. It is almost impossible to simultaneously complain and have a heart of gratitude. When gratitude becomes your default setting, it transforms complaining into worship, entitlement into humility, and stress into trust. Let’s be real: we are owed nothing in this world. The only thing we actually deserve is hell, but God, in His amazing grace, gave us salvation. When you truly grasp that, gratitude is the only logical response.

Lord,

Thank You for the grace You pour out on me every single day. Forgive me for the times I try to separate my spiritual life from my everyday life, or when I just “clock in” on Sundays. Help me to let Your Word dwell so richly in my heart that I can navigate the darkest seasons with absolute confidence. Give me the courage to be a true ambassador for You—aligning my lips and my lifestyle. And when life gets heavy and the spiritual warfare is loud, transform my complaining into worship through a heart of deep, unconditional gratitude.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If Christianity were a crime, would your daily habits give the jury enough evidence to convict you? Take a moment to reflect on today’s message, and ask God to help you align your lips and your lifestyle this week.
