[Devo] Unshakable: Finding Your Safe Place and True Freedom (Psalms 31–33)

When everything around us feels like shifting sand, God offers an anchor. Dive into what it means to be truly secure and profoundly forgiven.

Into Your Hands

Imagine being so surrounded by critics, enemies, and simple bad luck that even your closest friends avoid you on the street. That’s the heavy atmosphere of Psalm 31. David describes himself as a “broken vessel”—forgotten, slandered, and exhausted.

But right in the thick of the panic, he drops an anchor. He says, “Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.” (If those words sound familiar, it’s because Jesus quoted them from the cross). David follows that up in verse 15 with a beautiful phrase: “My times are in your hand.” Your calendar, your future, your anxieties, and your victories aren’t ruled by chance or by your critics. They are held safely in the hands of a faithful God.

The Relief of Being Honest

If Psalm 31 is about escaping external trouble, Psalm 32 is about escaping the trouble inside our own hearts. It is one of the most beautiful passages on grace in the entire Bible.

David talks about a time when he tried to hide his sin. He kept quiet, and the result was agonizing: “My bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.” Trying to fake it or hide our messes from God is exhausting. But look at what happens when he finally opens up: “I acknowledged my sin to you… and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” True freedom doesn’t come from pretending we are perfect; it comes from bringing our brokenness into the light and receiving the total, unearned forgiveness of God.

A New Song

When you realize you are secure in God’s hands and completely forgiven by His grace, the natural response is joy. Psalm 33 breaks out into a loud, celebratory song of praise.

The psalmist looks at the stars, looks at the oceans, and looks at the history of the world, concluding that God’s counsel stands forever. We don’t have to put our hope in political systems, financial security, or our own strength. Verse 20 summarizes our daily posture perfectly: “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.”

Lord Jesus,

I surrender my timeline, my worries, and my future into Your hands today. Thank You that my times are held by You. Forgive me for the ways I try to hide my mistakes or mask my weaknesses. Thank You for the sweet relief of Your grace and the joy of being fully known and fully loved. Be my help and my shield today as I place my trust in Your steadfast love.

Amen.
