[Devo]  From Weeping to Dancing: Finding Joy in the Middle of the Struggle (Psalms 28–30)

Life can flip from a silent night of weeping to a morning of pure joy. Let's look at how God transforms our heaviest seasons when we cry out to Him.

Hearing the Silence

Have you ever prayed and felt like your words were just bouncing off the ceiling? In Psalm 28, David starts out in exactly that space. He cries out, “To you, O Lord, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me.” There is a raw, gritty honesty here. He is terrified that if God stays silent, he’s going to sink into the pit.

We’ve all had those moments where life feels incredibly heavy and God feels incredibly distant. But notice what David does: he doesn’t stop talking. He pours out his frustration, and by the end of the chapter, his focus shifts from his problems to God’s character. He reminds himself, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts.”

The Voice That Breaks the Cedars

If Psalm 28 is about the terrifying silence of God, Psalm 29 is the exact opposite. It’s a celebration of the sheer, unbridled power of God’s voice. The psalmist describes God’s voice tearing through the wilderness, striking with flashes of fire, and shaking the desert.

When your world feels chaotic, remember that the same voice that commands the storm is the voice that speaks peace over your life. God is never out of control. He sits enthroned over the flood, and He uses that absolute sovereignty to give strength and peace to His people.

Morning is Coming

This all culminates beautifully in Psalm 30. You might know the famous line from verse 5: “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”

David looks back at a time when he felt secure, then hit a valley, cried out for mercy, and watched God show up. God didn’t just give him a pass out of the valley; He completely transformed the landscape. Verse 11 says, “You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.” If you are in a night season right now, hang on. The morning is on its way.

Father,

Some days feel like an endless night, and the silence feels incredibly loud. Help me to keep crying out to You, even when I don’t feel an immediate answer. Remind my heart today that You are my strength and shield. Speak Your powerful words of peace over the storms in my life, and give me the faith to believe that my mourning will one day turn into dancing.

Amen.
