God is Not Quiet (So Why Are We?)
We live in a world that loves to shout. Turn on the news, scroll through social media, or walk down a busy street, and you’re hit with a wall of noise. Everyone is trying to claim the throne. Everyone wants to be heard.
But then we walk into our faith spaces, or sit down for our quiet times, and we treat God like a sleeping toddler. We whisper. We tiptoe.
Psalm 47 kicks the door open and says, “Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy!” (Psalm 47:1). This isn’t a polite golf clap. This is a stadium-level, championship-winning roar. Why? Because the Lord, the Most High, is awesome. He is a great king over all the earth.
The View from the Throne
It’s easy to look at our lives—or the state of the world—and feel like things are spinning out of control. We get anxious about tomorrow, stressed about our families, and overwhelmed by our schedules. But Psalm 47 shifts our perspective from our immediate chaos to God’s eternal reality.
“God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet… God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.” (Psalm 47:5, 8)
Notice the tense there: God reigns. Past, present, and future. He isn’t trying to figure out a backup plan. He isn’t stressed. He is sitting comfortably and securely on His throne. When we praise Him loudly, we aren’t just making noise; we are reminding our own anxious hearts who is actually in charge.
Standing Together in the Shout
Here’s the beautiful thing about this Psalm: it’s entirely corporate. It’s written for “all peoples.” It’s a collective shout. In a culture that isolated us and tells us to just handle our business on our own, worship reminds us that we are part of a massive, global, historic family. We don’t just sing solo; we join the chorus.
Lord God,
You are the King of all the earth. Forgive me for the times I have made You look small in my eyes, or whispered my praise while shouting my worries. Today, I choose to declare Your goodness. I rest in the fact that You are on the throne, completely in control. Remind me today that I don’t have to carry the weight of the world, because You already hold it.
Amen.
