[Devo] The Beautiful Fortress (Psalm 48)

We look for security in bank accounts, career ladders, and backup plans. But Psalm 48 points us to a different kind of stronghold—and it's found in community.

Built to Last

If you look at the ancient world, cities lived and died by their walls. If your city was on a hill and had massive towers, you slept soundly at night. If it didn’t, you were constantly looking over your shoulder.

Psalm 48 is a love letter to Mount Zion, the city of God. The Psalmist writes, “Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God!… Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels…” (Psalm 48:1, 12-13).

It sounds like a tour guide showing off real estate. But they aren’t marveling at human architecture. They are marveling at God’s presence within the city. God has made Himself known as a fortress.

What Are You Leaning On?

We don’t build stone ramparts anymore, but we still build fortresses. We try to secure our lives with financial safety nets, perfect health routines, or flawless reputations. We think, If I can just build this wall high enough, nothing can hurt me.

But those walls crumble. The stock market dips, health changes, and reputations can fade overnight. Psalm 48 reminds us that the only fortress that actually holds is the steadfast love of God.

“As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts… We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple.” (Psalm 48:8-9)

Passing the Security Along

The Psalm ends with an instruction: tell the next generation. Why? Because true security isn’t something we hoard for ourselves. When we experience the safety, grace, and love of God within His church, we are called to invite others into that same refuge. We look around at our brothers and sisters, check on our “towers,” and make sure everyone is safe inside.

Father,

You are my true stronghold. Forgive me for the ways I try to build my own fortresses out of things that cannot save me. Teach me to trust in Your steadfast love above all else. Thank You for placing me in a community of believers where we can point each other back to You. Help me to be a safe place for someone else today.

Amen.
