[Devo] Taming the Tongue in Community (Psalm 15:3)

Words can build a bridge or burn a relationship down in seconds. Today, Psalm 15 challenges us to examine how we talk about the people around us.

Watching Our Words

After dealing with the internal heart check, David moves outward to our relationships. In verse 3, he describes the citizen of God’s hill as one:

“…who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend.” (Psalm 15:3)

The tongue is a relatively small muscle, but it packs an unbelievable amount of leverage. Slander, gossip, and careless words act like a slow poison inside a church family or a community. David makes a sharp point here: you cannot walk in close, vibrant intimacy with God while simultaneously tearing down the people who are made in His image.

Fierce Guardians of Community

Notice that David specifically highlights how we treat our “neighbor” and our “friend.” It’s often easy to maintain a polite filter around strangers or acquaintances. The real test of spiritual maturity is how we speak about the people closest to us—especially when they aren’t in the room to defend themselves.

Protecting our community means refusing to give gossip a platform. A lifestyle that honors God is one that actively guards the reputations of others and uses words to heal rather than wound.

Father,

Set a guard over my mouth today. Let my words build up, bring life, and carry grace to those who hear them. Forgive me for the times I’ve listened to or participated in gossip. Help me to honor You by honoring my neighbors and friends with the way I speak about them.

Amen.

Healthy community requires us to actively protect one another. If you hear someone being spoken of negatively today, be the ONE who steps in to shift the conversation or highlight their value instead.
