Who Gets to Stay?
Imagine receiving an invitation to the most exclusive, peaceful, and secure home you’ve ever known—and the host looks you in the eye and says, “Make yourself at home. Stay as long as you want.” That is the exact imagery David taps into at the opening of Psalm 15. He asks a dual question:
“O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?” (Psalm 15:1)
In the ancient Near East, being a guest in someone’s tent wasn’t just a casual dynamic. It meant total protection, provision, and shared life. David isn’t asking how to earn salvation through good works; he’s asking a relational question. He’s asking, “What kind of life aligns with the heart of a holy God? What does it look like to live in close, uninterrupted proximity to You?”
Living from the Inside Out
Through the finished work of Jesus, the curtain has been torn, and we have bold access to God’s presence every single day. We don’t have to climb a literal mountain to find Him. But while access is a gift of grace, intimacy requires alignment.
If we want to experience the peace, power, and closeness of God’s “holy hill” in our daily schedules, we have to care about the things He cares about. Dwelling with God means letting His character shape our conduct. It starts with a heart that doesn’t just want a quick Sunday visit, but longs to remain close to the Host.
Lord,
Thank You that You don’t hide from us. You invite us into Your presence, into Your tent, and into Your family. Help me to not just visit You when things are tough, but to truly dwell with You every day this week. Align my heart, my thoughts, and my ambitions with Yours today.
Amen.
