Orthodoxy Before Orthopraxy: The Feed of Your Mind
If you’ve been hanging with us through the book of Colossians, you know our golden rule: Orthodoxy before Orthopraxy. Right thinking must come before right practice.
Have you ever noticed how your smartphone algorithm works? You can look up a product, or sometimes just talk about something out loud, and suddenly your entire social media feed is flooded with ads for it. Your digital feed is formed by what you focus on. Your mind works the exact same way. What you constantly think about, listen to, and watch shapes who you are becoming. “Where the mind goes, the man follows.”
That’s why Paul issues a bold command in Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.”
This isn’t about having occasional, fleeting thoughts about God. It’s about a completely reoriented life direction. To set your mind is to make a choice ahead of time. It’s the difference between a goal and a standard. A goal is something you hit and move on from; a standard is the baseline of how you conduct your life. When you set the standard before the temptation arrives, you take away the enemy’s opportunity to lure you.
Here are four standards of a resurrected, reoriented mind:
Choosing Humility Over Pride
Colossians 3:3 tells us that our lives are “hidden with Christ in God.” If your life is hidden in Christ, it means you are completely secure and defined by Him. You don’t have to prove anything to anybody.
Pride rushes to defend, explain, and win. Humility listens first. It doesn’t need the last word. Humility owns its flaws and grows from them. When your mind is set on things above, you stop comparing yourself to other people’s highlight reels and you start resting securely in the identity Jesus has already given you.
Choosing Obedience Over Comfort
Let’s be real with one another: growth almost never happens in your comfort zone. God will never call you to something easier; He will always call you to something harder.
Comfort says, “Stay safe. Stay familiar.” Obedience says, “Trust God, even if it stretches you.” We have to put to death our earthly desires because easy isn’t always right, and right isn’t always easy. When the storm comes, you have to have the courage to step out of the boat.
Choosing Eternity Over Temporal Gain
Living with a heavenly mindset means living with the end in mind. Temporal gain focuses on what you can get right now; eternal living focuses on who you can impact for the Kingdom.
We have to build the habit of asking ourselves a tough question: Does this choice move me closer to Christ, or does it just make my life easier? What we do today echoes in eternity. Let your life be a daily reminder that grace is greater, hope is alive, and a second chance is possible.
Choosing Others Over Self
At the core of all of this, a mind set on heaven confronts our fleshly desire for recognition, comfort, and control. In Colossians 3:11, Paul reminds us that “Christ is all, and in all.” In the Kingdom of God, there is no room for dividing lines, statuses, or letting pride run the show.
This isn’t just something Jesus preached; it’s how He lived. He noticed the people everyone else ignored. He served even when He was exhausted. He gave when it cost Him everything. So, instead of saying “me first,” let’s start saying “love first.”
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for raising me to a new life and giving me a second chance. Forgive me for the times I have allowed the temporary things of this earth to form the feed of my mind. Today, I set my mind on things above. I choose humility over pride, obedience over comfort, eternity over temporal gain, and others over myself. Give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and live with the end in mind, so that everywhere I go, a little bit of Heaven enters the room with me.
In Your holy name, Amen.
