We are continuing our journey through the book of Colossians in our series, Faith Under Pressure. In this letter, written from a prison cell, the Apostle Paul addresses a church he has never met to remind them of one crucial truth: Jesus is enough.
In Colossians 1:15-20, we encounter one of the most powerful descriptions of Jesus in the entire Bible. Paul isn’t just giving us a history lesson; he is giving us the antidote to a “reduced faith.” As we learned this Sunday, “If you don’t embrace a Christ that is big enough… you will be a sitting duck” for the pressures of this world.
Here are three truths about Jesus that change everything about how we live.
1. He is the Image of the Invisible God
We often try to humanize God or bring Him down to our level, but Paul tells us that Jesus is “the image of the invisible God”. This doesn’t just mean He looks like God; it means He is God. He is the perfect revelation of the Father’s character.
When we understand that Jesus is the “firstborn over all creation”—meaning He has the rank, authority, and priority over everything—we realize we cannot have God on our own terms. He is the Authority, and He is Supreme.+1
2. He is the Sustainer (The Cure for Anxiety)
Paul writes that “in Him all things hold together”. This is a massive promise. If Jesus holds the universe together—keeping the earth spinning at the perfect speed and gravity holding us down—He can certainly hold your life together.+1
This truth challenges us to stop living like anxiety is our lord. Anxiety often stems from us moving ourselves to the center of the universe, thinking we have to control everything to be safe. But we are not the center—He is. And because He is the Sustainer, we can trust Him with the details of our lives.
3. He Determines Your Value
If Jesus is the Creator and the Goal of everything, where does that leave us? It leads to a humbling but freeing realization: You are not the center of the universe. You were created by Him and for Him.+1
But while you aren’t the center, you are incredibly valuable. How do you determine the value of something? Value is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it.
You might feel worthless or defined by your past mistakes, but the God of the universe looked at you and paid the ultimate price. He didn’t pay with silver or gold; He paid with the life of His Son to reconcile you to Himself. You are priceless because the price paid for you was infinite.
Father, I confess that I often try to be the center of my own universe. I carry burdens I was not designed to carry and worry about things I cannot control. Thank You for reminding me today that You are the Sustainer—You hold all things together, including my life. Forgive me for reducing You to just a helper or a teacher, and help me to see You as You truly are: Supreme, Preeminent, and Enough. Thank You for paying the ultimate price for me, proving that I am valuable and loved. I surrender my anxiety to You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Our mission is that No ONE Walks Alone. If you are struggling to believe that you are valuable or if you feel like your life is falling apart, please reach out to us. We want to stand with you and remind you of who you are in Christ.
