Who’s in Your Boat? Finding Peace When Storms Hit Your Journey

When life gets turbulent, fear often convinces us that we’re sinking alone or out of God’s will. But what if the storm is the very classroom where discipleship happens? Discover why you can rest in the storm with Jesus at your side.

Discipleship Isn’t a Straight Line

When we give our lives to Christ, many of us secretly expect the road ahead to be a steady, upward climb—“up and to the right” without a bump in sight. But real-life discipleship rarely looks like a neat chart.

Following Jesus looks more like a coil: full of mountain-top moments, unexpected valleys, and steady rhythms of growth. The truth is, spiritual maturity rarely happens in the easy seasons. The real shaping occurs when life gets unpredictable and we’re forced to trust Him in the deep end.

Heading to “The Other Side”

In Mark 4:35, Jesus gives a simple command to His disciples: “Let us go across to the other side.”

For the disciples, “the other side” wasn’t just another shoreline—it was Gentile territory. It represented an unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and uncertain destination that most folks in their day actively avoided. Yet, true discipleship means following Jesus wherever He leads, even when it pushes us out of our comfort zones and into spaces that challenge us.

Every word in Scripture is placed with divine intentionality. When Jesus calls us toward a destination, obedience means getting in the boat and pushing off from the bank.

Storms in the Center of God’s Will

Notice something crucial about Mark 4: the disciples didn’t encounter a fierce tempest because they were rebelling or off track like Jonah. They were in the middle of a raging storm precisely because they were obeying Jesus.

The Sea of Galilee is geographically vulnerable to sudden, violent squalls rushing down from the surrounding mountains, whipping up waves that could easily swamp a fishing boat. Even seasoned fishermen on board were terrified of perishing.

We often assume that experiencing hardship, sudden bad news, or relational strain means God has abandoned us or that we made a wrong turn. But being in a storm doesn’t mean you’re out of God’s will. Often, the storm is the very place Jesus uses to reveal who He truly is.

3 Reasons We Don’t Have to Fear

When the waves crashed over the boat, the disciples woke Jesus with a desperate question: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Fear made them forget who was resting right beside them.

Whenever fear begins to magnify your circumstances, anchor your heart in these three truths:

  1. His Presence: Jesus was already in the boat with them, just as He is with us today. He has promised never to leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8).
  2. His Peace: While the wind howled, Jesus was sound asleep in the stern. He offers us a peace that transcends earthly understanding (John 14:27)—a peace rooted in His sovereignty, not the forecast.
  3. His Promise: Jesus didn’t say, “Let’s go drown in the middle of the lake.” He said, “Let us go across to the other side.” What God begins, He is faithful to complete (Philippians 1:6).

Discipled, Not Destroyed

Jesus rebuked the wind and spoke calm into the sea: “Peace! Be still!” His goal wasn’t just to give a lesson on surviving bad weather; it was to reveal His identity as Lord over all creation.

God doesn’t allow storms into our lives to destroy us—He uses them to disciple us, refine us, and draw our hearts into deeper dependence on Him. Whatever you’re facing today, keep your eyes on the One who commands the wind and waves.

Lord Jesus,

Thank You that You are with me in every season and every storm. Forgive me for the times fear takes over and I forget Your presence, Your peace, and Your promises. Teach me to trust You when the water rises and the destination feels uncomfortable. Calm the anxiety in my heart, anchor my faith in Your Word, and help me walk with confidence knowing You are in control.

In Your mighty name, Amen.
