Follow Me: Answering the Call in the Ordinary Moments

Discipleship isn't about having a polished resume or living a life of comfort—it’s about leaving your nets and following Jesus right where you are. Explore what it truly means to answer the call of Christ this week.

Leaving the Nets Behind

When Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He didn’t head to the religious schools or look for the most highly educated scholars of the day. He went to workaday fishermen—Simon, Andrew, James, and John—and spoke four simple words: “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”

True discipleship begins in the daily rhythm of life. Discipleship isn’t just an intellectual agreement with Christian doctrine or a one-time decision; it is a daily, active commitment to walk with Jesus, become like Him, and help others do the exact same.

Key Takeaways from the Sermon

1. Jesus Sees You Before He Calls You

Before Jesus ever uttered a word to Simon and Andrew, the text tells us He saw them [16:31]. He didn’t just notice their physical presence; He saw their potential, their future, and who they could become in God’s hands. He sees where you are today—your struggles, your everyday grind, and your past—and He still invites you into His story.

2. God Uses People Who Are Already in Motion

Notice what the future apostles were doing when Jesus met them: they were casting nets and mending equipment [15:56, 33:24]. They were working hard. God rarely calls us out of laziness; He interrupts our everyday momentum to redirect our efforts toward His kingdom. You don’t have to wait for extraordinary circumstances to serve God—He meets you right in your ordinary workday [18:25, 19:55].

3. “I Will Make You”: Discipleship is a Process

Jesus promised, “I will make you become…” [23:41]. Notice the ongoing process implied in those words. Becoming a disciple is not an overnight transformation or a finished product [24:32]. It is a lifelong journey of sanctification, growth, and continual molding by the Holy Spirit.

4. Discipleship Calls for Surrender

The gospel of Mark emphasizes immediate action, using the word “immediately” dozens of times [33:34]. When Jesus called, the fishermen left their nets, their boats, and even their family business to follow Him [33:15, 33:28]. Following Jesus always costs something—whether it’s comfort, personal security, or our own agendas [35:48]. But what we gain in Christ is infinitely greater than anything we leave behind.

5. Saved From Sin, Saved For Mission

We are not merely saved from judgment; we are saved for a mission [29:52]. A fisherman feeds people for a day, but a fisher of men impacts eternity [30:19]. Our ultimate purpose isn’t just making a living or chasing comfort—it is making disciples wherever God has placed us [31:22].

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and calling me right where I am. Forgive me for the times I have clung to my own comfort, my nets, or my personal plans instead of walking in full obedience to You. Give me the courage to step out in faith, to surrender my security, and to follow You unconditionally. Mold my heart to care about the eternal destination of those around me, and use my everyday life as an instrument for Your glory.

Amen.
