The Ultimate Moving Day
There’s an old joke that you never see a U-Haul truck following a hearse. No matter how much stuff we accumulate, how many degrees we earn, or how grand our homes are, the exit rate for humanity is a solid 100%. We all leave it behind.
Psalm 49 picks up right where we left off yesterday, driving this point home with sobering clarity:
“For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him… Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.” (Psalm 49:17, 20)
It sounds intense, but it’s actually incredibly liberating. If we can’t take our earthly wealth with us, then we can stop stressing so much about hoarding it, and start focusing on what actually lasts.
The Redemption We Couldn’t Pay For
Yesterday we read that no human can pay the ransom for their own soul. But look at the pivot point in verse 15:
“But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.” (Psalm 49:15)
What we could never afford, God did. He paid the ultimate price to rescue us. Through Jesus, our ransom has been fully settled. When you know your eternity is secure and paid for by God Himself, your relationship with your time, your money, and your energy changes. You move from a mindset of scarcity (I need to keep everything for myself) to a mindset of abundance (God has rescued me, so I can give freely).
Investing in What Lasts
If we can’t take material things with us, what does last? People. Relationships. The church. The kingdom of God.
When we invest our lives into serving others, loving our neighbors, and building up our church family, we are investing in eternity. We are making sure that as we walk through this life toward our true home, we are bringing as many people with us as possible.
Jesus,
Thank You for paying the ransom for my soul that I could never afford. Because You have made me rich in grace, help me to live generously with my life. Shift my focus from building my own temporary kingdom to investing in Your eternal one. Help me to value people over possessions today.
Amen.
