[Devo]  In the Pit: Honest Confession and Patient Waiting (Psalms 38–41)

Ever felt stuck in a miry bog, waiting for a breakthrough? You aren't the first. Let's talk about the messy, beautiful reality of waiting on God.

The Weight of Our Own Choices

Sometimes the trouble we face isn’t because of outside forces—it’s because of our own poor choices. Psalms 38 and 39 pull back the curtain on that heavy reality. David is suffering physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and he openly admits it’s tied to his sin: “There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.”

It takes immense courage to look in the mirror and say, “I messed up. I caused this storm.” But notice that David doesn’t run away from God in his guilt; he runs to Him. He says, “But for you, O Lord, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.” Even when our own failures put us in the pit, God is still the one we look to for rescue.

Pulled Up From the Mud

That rescue shows up in one of the most triumphant declarations in the entire Bible: Psalm 40.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”

Notice the sequence: waiting, crying out, being lifted, and being secured. If you feel stuck in the mud of a difficult season, depression, anxiety, or bad habits right now, know that the pit is not your permanent home. God specializes in muddy rescues. He doesn’t just pull you out; He puts a new song of praise in your mouth.

Blessed is the Generous Heart

The section wraps up with Psalm 41, focusing on how God cares for those who care for the weak. David is sick, surrounded by enemies who are whispering about his impending death, yet he rests in God’s ultimate protection. When we experience God lifting us out of our own pits, it fundamentally changes how we look at the people around us who are still stuck. We become agents of His healing and grace.

Father,

I confess that I’ve made choices that have complicated my life and hurt my soul. I don’t want to hide from You anymore. Thank You that You don’t leave me in the mud of my mistakes. I am waiting on You today, Lord. Reach down into my current situation, pull my feet out of the bog, and set me firmly on the rock of Christ. Put a new song in my mouth today.

Amen.
