[Devo] How to Sleep Peacefully When Your Mind Is Racing (Psalm 4, 5 & 6)

Tossing and turning with anxiety? Psalms 4 through 6 give us a blueprint for taking our rawest emotions to God so we can finally find true rest.

Flipping the Switch on Anxiety

We’ve all been there: it’s 2:00 AM, the room is completely dark, but your brain is running a marathon. You’re replaying conversations, worrying about bills, or stressing over tomorrow’s schedule.

In Psalm 4, David shows us how to navigate those exact moments. He doesn’t pretend everything is perfect. Instead, he speaks truth to his own restless heart:

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)

True peace isn’t the absence of trouble; it’s the presence of God. David is able to close his eyes because he knows that while he sleeps, the God who keeps him never does.

Licking Our Wounds Honestly

As we move into Psalms 5 and 6, the tone gets incredibly raw. David is dealing with workplace betrayal, physical exhaustion, and deep grief. In Psalm 6:6, he writes,

“I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears.”

If you’ve ever felt so overwhelmed that you couldn’t even find the words to pray, you are in good company. The beauty of these Psalms is that God doesn’t ask David to clean himself up before he talks to Him. God wants the real, unfiltered, messy version of you.

When we give God our mornings in prayer (Psalm 5:3) and trust Him with our tear-soaked nights (Psalm 6:8), we break the power of anxiety. He hears our weeping, and He welcomes us into His rest.

Father,

My mind wanders and my heart grows heavy when the nights get long. I give You my worries, my uncompleted to-do lists, and the situations I cannot fix. Wash over me with Your peace tonight. Help me to lie down and sleep soundly, knowing that You have tomorrow completely handled.

Amen.
