[Devo] Who Gets to Stand? (Psalm 24:1-6)

The world tells us to climb our way to the top by our own strength. But Psalm 24 asks a different question: Who is actually clean enough to stand in the presence of a holy God?

The Earth is His

We live in a culture obsessed with ownership. We talk about our houses, our careers, and our time. But David kicks off Psalm 24 by shattering that illusion: “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.”

Everything we see—and everyone we meet—belongs to God. When we realize we aren’t the owners of our lives but merely stewards, it changes how we view our daily steps. It humbles us.

Clean Hands, Pure Hearts

Because God owns it all and is completely holy, David asks a crucial question in verse 3: “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?”

The answer is terrifying if we try to achieve it on our own: “He who has clean hands and a pure heart…” If we are honest, our hands are often dirty with selfish actions, and our hearts are cluttered with mixed motives. If perfection is the standard, none of us can stand alone.

The Gift of Belonging

Thankfully, the story doesn’t end with our failure. Through Jesus, we are given the clean hands and pure hearts we could never forge ourselves. We receive the blessing and vindication David talks about. We don’t climb the hill of the Lord to earn His love; we stand there because Jesus carried us up. And the best part? We pursue this holy God together, as a generation seeking His face.

Father,

Remind me today that everything I have belongs to You. Forgive me for the ways I try to control my life or walk in my own strength. Thank You for cleaning my hands and purifying my heart through Jesus. Help me to seek Your face today alongside my church family.

Amen.
