Generosity over Exploitation
David wraps up his profile of a kingdom citizen in the final verse of the Psalm by looking at how we manage our financial leverage and resources:
“…who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.” (Psalm 15:5)
In ancient Israel, charging high interest to a fellow community member who had fallen on hard times was a direct way to exploit their vulnerability. David is pointing out that a person who lives in God’s presence practices radical fairness, justice, and generosity. They don’t use their wealth or leverage to take advantage of someone else’s crisis. Instead, they use what they have to protect and lift up the vulnerable.
The Great Finale
Then comes the overarching promise that anchors the entire Psalm: “He who does these things shall never be moved.”
Think back through the character traits we’ve unpacked together this week: integrity, internal truth, life-giving words, kept promises, and radical fairness. This list was never intended to be a legalistic checklist to earn God’s affection—it is the natural result of living close to Him. When your life is rooted deep in the unshakable character of God, the storms of life will blow, but they cannot knock you over. You remain steady because the One you dwell with is steady.
God,
Thank You for the incredible security I have in You. I don’t want to be tossed back and forth by the chaos, anxiety, and changing tides of this world. Root my life deeply in Your truth, Your generosity, and Your love. Thank You that because You are with me, I will never be moved.
Amen.
