Humble Faith: Drawing Near to God

Pride pushes God away, but humility draws Him near. When we surrender control and submit to Him, grace meets us right where we are.

As we continue our Forged in Faith journey through the Book of James, this week’s message brings us face to face with a hard but freeing truth: God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

In James 4, James confronts the source of so much conflict, restlessness, and spiritual dryness — unchecked desires and misplaced priorities. When our wants outweigh our surrender, our faith begins to fracture. The issue isn’t merely what we do; it’s who we’re living for.

James reminds us that spiritual compromise doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like drifting. Slowly replacing dependence on God with self-reliance. Choosing control over trust. Allowing pride to quietly take the place of prayer.

Yet woven throughout this chapter is an invitation full of grace:
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

That promise changes everything.

God doesn’t ask us to clean ourselves up before coming to Him. He asks us to come honestly — with humility, repentance, and a willingness to submit our lives fully to His will. Real faith isn’t proven by confidence in ourselves, but by surrender to God.

James calls believers to resist the devil, submit to God, grieve sin rightly, and humble themselves before the Lord. This is not about shame — it’s about restoration. When pride steps aside, grace rushes in. When we stop striving for control, we discover the peace that only God can give.

Faith that is forged through humility doesn’t boast in plans or accomplishments. It rests in the goodness and sovereignty of God. And when we choose humility, God promises to lift us up — in His time and His way.

Lord,
I come to You aware of how easily pride takes root in my heart.
Show me where I’ve relied on myself instead of trusting You.
Teach me to release control, to repent honestly, and to walk humbly before You.
I want to draw near — not with excuses or appearances — but with a surrendered heart.
Replace my striving with Your peace,
my pride with Your grace,
and my plans with Your will.
Lift me up as only You can,
and shape my life into one that honors You.
Amen.

Where might pride be quietly shaping your decisions or priorities?
Take time this week to draw near to God in humility — and consider sharing this post with someone who may need the reminder of His grace today.
